Original Abstract

The paper deals with dielectric studies of aging phenomena in commercially used high-temperature mica insulations. Insulation samples stressed by electric fields ranging from 10 kV/mm to 16,7 kV/mm were aged for up to 280 hours. The objective of the analysis was to examine whether the electrical breakdown, which is a pronounced localized event, is preceded by changes of bulk material properties – frequency and temperature dependence of the complex permittivity. The measurements carried out so far show the presence of at least one relaxation process and one conduction process. Both mechanisms depend strongly on temperature but they seem to be very little affected by electrical stress. Experimental results are analyzed and their potential implications for material diagnostics are discussed.
