Original Abstract

The paper discusses possibilities of ending dead-end track and approaches for designing buffer stops. Generally speaking, crucial aspect by choosing the right buffer stop is its energy absorbing capacity by impact and therefore slowing down the rolling stock to a halt. Approaches of different European railway managements are described. Energy absorption or deceleration should not be sudden. This case occurs with fixed buffer stops, where either the rolling stock of buffer stop is damaged on impact. As more suitable option of ending dead-end track, is using friction buffer stops or hydraulic buffer stops which decelerate the rolling stock gradually. Key factors while choosing appropriate buffer stop always depends on particular situation. In decisive process enter many factors such as type of train and its mass, impact speed, geometry of the track etc.
