Original Abstract

In the paper, the automatic gain control (AGC) methods used in an optical receiver for cable- free communication link are presented. The typical architecture of input circuits of the optical receiver for hundreds of megabits is a transimpedance or a high impedance front-end amplifier in combination with an avalanche photodiode (APD). For such connection the AGC circuit can affect the amplifier or the APD gain. Paper deals with sensitivity and bandwidth degradations due to receiver dynamic range extension. Finally an example of the AGC circuit that controls APD gain by means of the change in the reverse voltage applied to the diode is presented.
