Original Abstract
Up-to-date computers can be considered as powerful „hardware tool “ for calculation of various types of processes and equipment in the process industries. In case we use a convenient software we can create a very efficient background for computations of heat exchangers. However, it is very important to use computers in process and chemical engineering education only as a supporting tool, and focus on a problem to be solved. This approach (utilizing computer science - so attractive for students – in a proper way) has a double effect – it is very useful and important and it can attract young people for studying process and chemical engineering [1]. Heat exchangers are usually the most frequently used equipment in process, chemical, power industry and elsewhere. Therefore process engineers are required to understand and calculate them. Various complexity of calculations can be specified starting with the simplest heat and mass balance calculations in process simulation software packages (ChemCad, Aspen, Pro/II etc.), continuing with using professional software packages for thermal and hydraulic calculation (e.g. HTRI or HTFS ones), and ending with very complex simulations utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
