Original Abstract

Ionic liquids are salts composed of huge cations and small anions. The shapes of cations must be asymmetric, causing depression of freezing point below room temperature. This asymmetry is the reason for little gain of entropy connected to solidification and also the reason for very low crystallization heat. These thermodynamic quantities push the melting point below common temperature. These compounds are usually called as IL (Ionic Liquids). The cations can be inorganic based on central atoms in "onium" configuration, while another important group of cations contains heterocyclic cores. Some properties of methyl - ethyl - imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIM. BF4) will be described in this paper. The specific conductivity 16 mS/cm is sufficient for some applications. Vapour pressure is extremely low and flash point is non-measurably high. Such conductivity is only by one order of magnitude lower than the conductivity of salts dissolved in an aprotic solvent.
