Original Abstract

Airborne particulate matter (PM) consist of solid and liquid particles dispersed in air. This pollutant may cause health deterioration especially through respiratory pathways. However, the particles themselves can be carriers of many other dangerous substances, above all heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants. The increased concentration of these substances may increase risk of respiratory and cardiovascular system as well as carcinogenic risk to human health. This work evaluates the concentrations of heavy metals bonded to PM10 particles (particles smaller than 10 μm in diameter) in the atmosphere of an area of Brno city. Heavy metal concentrations were evaluated and potential health risks were estimated.
