Original Abstract
The paper discusses possibilities of ending dead-end track and approaches for designing buffer stops. Generally speaking, crucial aspect while choosing the right buffer stop is its kinetic energy absorbing capacity by impact and therefore slowing down the rolling stock to a halt. Energy absorption and deceleration should not be sudden. This case occurs with fixed buffer stops where either the rolling stock or buffer stop is damaged upon impact (or both). As a more suitable option of ending dead-end track is using friction buffer stops or hydraulic buffer stops which decelerate the rolling stock gradually. In the paper, there are several cases of designing friction buffer stop. The challenge while designing the buffer stop is to take into account the velocity and the mass of trains running on the dead-end track and to meet all criteria such as energy absorbing capacity of the buffer stop, rate of deceleration while braking, risk assessment and usable length of a dead-end track in a railway station
