Original Abstract

Poorly known processes of biofouling are rather often described by sets of qualitatively defined relations (e.g. if temperature goes up then concentration goes down) and / or by trends (e.g. acidity is decreasing). However, this set of inconsistent, sparse, inaccurate and subjective data and isolated knowledge items is, rather often, the only description available and must be used to generate the best possible model. Algorithms offered by computer packages for statistical treatment traditionally dictate conventional approximation of multidimensional data. For example a polynomial function is frequently used because of simplicity of the least square algorithm. However, severe information shortage requires the best mathematical models to be used for parameters identification. Any choice of the best formal model must be based on extracting typical features of available data sets including shallow and deep biofouling knowledge. Qualitative generation of potentially best models is based on three values only increasing, constant, decreasing. The paper presents the linear qualitative generation only. Qualitative linear models have similar advantages (simplicity of algorithms, well established theories) and disadvantages (linearization - limited ranges of applications) as their quantitative counterparts. However, the generated linear qualitative model is a meaningful qualitative model for further quantitative analysis parameters identification. The basic ideas are demonstrated by a well-known simple problem of oscillation. There are two case studies, one biofouling model is based on six relevant variables. For example: Biocide concentration, Mechanical energy, Temperature, Biofouling. The second case study is based on a model of an anaerobic fermentation.
