Original Abstract
Biofouling is an interdisciplinary and multidimensional process. Moreover the measurements of biofouling have low measurement accuracy and high natural variability as all bio related systems. Therefore a simple algorithm of experiments planning easily discovers that the total number of measurements, if an acceptable accuracy of the final statistical model is required, is unacceptably high. The main reason is that statistical analysis of multidimensional tasks is prohibitively information-intensive and there is a serious information shortage of biofouling knowledge. A qualitative model of a biofouling system can be used to generate all possible qualitative behaviours / scenarios. The complete list of all possible scenarios can represent, for example, a qualitative description of objective functions and independent variables and their changes. This is a very useful information for further engineering studies (e.g. optimisation or even vector optimisation). Two case studies are presented is presented in detail using the following two sets of variables (The First study - Biocide concentration, Mechanical energy per volume, Temperature, CFU - Colon Forming Unit, Biofouling), (The second study - Temperature, Zeta potential, Dead Volume, Exponent of reducing ability and pH of activated sludge, Contact Angle, Critical Flux, Occupation Rate, Biofouling)
