Šifrování, kryptografie či jinak nazvané prostředky k utajování (zajištění důvěrnosti) informací jsou dílem povinností dle určitých předpisů, dílem dobrovolně přijatým řešením dle rozhodnutí správce informačního nebo komunikačního systému. Kryptografická ochrana je silným nástrojem, jehož význam se stále zvyšuje. Důvody k šifrování by měly vyplývat z analýzy rizik a být konfrontovány s analýzou ekonomické efektivnosti. Příspěvek se zabývá definováním pojmu „bezpečnost IS“, právními předpisy ukládajícími či upravujícími povinnost šifrovat a současnou dichotomií mezi snahou o extrémní ochranu údajů, zejména osobních, a snahou vlád o prolomení ochrany soukromí pod záminkou boje proti terorismu.

Encryption, cryptography or other means of confidentiality (information confidentiality) are part of the obligations under certain regulations, in part by a voluntary solution adopted by the decision-maker of an information or communication system. Cryptographic protection is a powerful tool whose importance is constantly increasing. Reasons for encryption should result from risk analysis and be confronted with an analysis of economic efficiency. This paper deals with the definition of the term "IS security", the laws that impose or modify the obligation to encrypt, and the current dichotomy between the pursuit of extreme data protection, especially personal protection, and the efforts of governments to break the protection of privacy under the pretext of combating terrorism.
