Original Abstract

Internal instability in soil involves erosion of fine particles caused by the hydraulic forces imposed by seepage or leakage flow, which may cause considerable changes in the hydraulic and mechanical behaviour of the soil. It has been documented that three factors act in internal erosion, namely soil susceptibility, hydraulic action and state of stress. The latter factor is still not completely scrutinized. Therefore, in the paper an overview of available researches on the phenomenon was conducted with respect to the relation between instability characteristics and stress state in the soil. Types of internal erosion test methods were summarized and classified, available findings of laboratory methods were briefly assessed. The initiation and development of internal erosion in relation to the effect of stress state was described as well. Final discussion on the effect of stress on internal erosion at particular locations of dam was carried out based on the available data. The proposals for the further necessary research are mentioned.
