Original Abstract
Dispersed fibre reinforcement of concrete improves specific properties and one of them is fire resistance. In several studies was proven that polypropylene fibres can inhibit or partly prevent concrete from explosive spalling. New kind of fibres which can be used as dispersed reinforcement are chopped basalt fibres (BF) with potential to improve not only physical and mechanical properties of concrete. Basalt is rock with suitable properties for resistance to high temperatures, as low coefficient of thermal expansion and stability up to 600 °C to 700 °C. Concrete mixes with various doses of cement and chopped basalt fibres were investigated within this study. Properties of fresh and hardened concrete were tested and evaluated with focus on spacing factor of porous system. Air void characteristics of fresh concrete were verified by standard pressure gauge method and by modern test AVA-3000Air Void Analyzer for evaluation of spacing factor of fresh concrete. Determination of air void characteristic in hardened concrete was carried out according European Standard CSN EN 480-11: 2005 [8]. Due to large damages of concrete structure was not possible to measure changes of porous system evaluated by spacing factor after thermal load. Compressive strength was investigated before and after thermal load. Special thermal regimes with maximum temperature 400 °C, 600 °C and 800 °C were applied. Results showed that chopped basalt fibres have positive impact not only on mechanical properties of concrete but also on its fire resistance. Two different doses of chopped basalt fibres were tested but further research is in progress.
