Original Abstract

The article describes the statistical and sensitivity analysis of the load-carrying capacity (LCC) of a slender hot-rolled steel beam subjected to lateral-torsional buckling due to uniform bending. The beam is modelled using the finite element method with SOLID185 elements in ANSYS software. LCC is determined using a geometrically and materially non-linear solution with consideration given to the effects of initial random imperfections and residual stress. A Latin Hypercube Sampling algorithm is used to generate samples of initial imperfections. LCC is approximated using a polynomial, which permits the use of a high number of simulation runs. The output of the statistical analysis is the design quantile of LCC, which verifies the reliability of the design according to the Eurocode 3 standard. Two types of sensitivity analysis, (i) and (ii), are applied. The results for (i) deal with the influence of input imperfections with respect to their random variability. They are supplemented by the results obtained for analysis (ii), which provide a description of the inaccuracies in the statistical moments of these input variables (second degree of uncertainty). Sensitivity analysis (ii) showed that modifying the mean value or standard deviation of the residual stress has a relatively small effect (in comparison with other imperfections) on the design quantile. Analyses are performed using the step-by-step method for non-dimensionless slenderness values of zero to three, and the obtained results are plotted in graphs.
