Original Abstract

Synthetics musk fragrances are commonly used as fragrant constitutes of perfumes, detergents, cosmetics and personal care products. The average number of fragrances is twelve per sample [1]. These compounds are ubiquitously present in the environment due to their high lipophilicity and low biodegradability. Wastewater treatment plants have been identified as major point source of entering to environment. Some musk compounds must be monitored due to their potential toxicity. Fragrances are increasingly known as a trigger in health conditions such as asthma, allergies and migraine headaches. Due to their lipophilicity have been found to accumulate in adipose tissue and are present in breast milk [2]. The nineteen musk compounds with different structure were analyzed, especially two nitromusk compounds (musk ketone, musk xylene), two polycyclic musk compounds (Tonalide (AHTN), Galaxolide (HHCB)), five macrocyclic musk compounds (Ethylen brassylate, Musk MC4, Exaltolide, Habanolide, Ambrettolide) and ten linear musk compounds (D-Limonen, Linalool, Citronellol, Arocet, hexyl cinnamic aldehyde, isobornyl acetate, allyl cyclohexyl propionate, Fresco menthe, Lilial, Aroflorone). Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS SPME) followed by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection is suitable technique for the determination of musk compounds. This technique has necessary limit of detection and quantification for low concentrations occurring in real samples. The developed optimized method was applied to the analysis of real water samples obtained from river and wastewater treatment plants located in Czech Republic.
