Original Abstract
Despite the great promise of advanced mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) for future lightweight functional materials [1] and the attempts to prepare biomimetic hierarchical structures with superior properties [2], there is missing fundamental knowledge of mechanical and relaxation response of single nanostructures – good dispersion, clusters, and aggregates that would provide key information for designing hierarchical or multidomain nanocomposites processable by additive manufacturing technologies. This is just what we focus on in this study. Deep understanding of dispersion governing parameters during solvent blending technique achieved in our previous study [3] allowed us to control the final nanostructure and prepare PNCs of three dispersion states – individually dispersed NPs, chain bound clusters, and contact aggregates at constant composition by varying preparation protocol conditions. Prepared PNCs were utilized to investigate the principal differences in relaxation and mechanical properties of various nanostructures. Moreover, nanoparticles (NPs) were used as “probes” in polymer matrix that affect segmental ordering and relaxation dynamic heterogeneity in amorphous polymers during the preparation and vitrification. This study provides new data that could help in deriving relationship between nano scale segmental dynamics and macro scale mechanical properties of polymer glasses.
