Original Abstract

Due to the ever increasing cost of majority of primary raw materials and especially the issue of environmental protection, searching for innovative solutions to re-use residual waste has become more discussed in recent years than in previous decades. In construction industry, the phenomenon results in designing of environment-friendly composite materials whose main components consist of recyclable/waste materials. The wood-plastic composites (also known as WPC), so-called “second generation bioplastics”, definitely meet the requirements. In construction industry, the wood-plastic composites are mainly used for floor and façade cladding connected to the supporting structure by traditional mechanical joints. However, with this type of fixing, local defects of the joints often appear resulting subsequently in damaging of the actual cladding. That is why solutions with adhesive connections have been required ever more frequently in recent years. Bonding of composite materials is however rather complicated. The presented paper is focused on experimental analyses of adhesive joints combined with selected WPC façade cladding materials. For comparison purposes, two HDPE based products and one PVC based product were chosen. To assess their adhesion characteristics, two testing methods were defined to determine tensile strength of adhesive joints, ČSN EN 1465 and ČSN 73 2577 (Determination of tensile lap-shear strength of bonded assemblies and Test for surface finish adhesion of building structures to the base). The adhesive joint was made by one-component polyurethane glue intended for facade bonding. The supporting structure was made of aluminium. The results proved that the type of the used plastic component greatly affects adhesive characteristics of the bonded surface; all tested WPCs required modification of their surface finish in order to improve their adhesive properties. Three treatment methods of the surface were carried out: mechanical, chemical and physical. In all cases, the adhesive characteristics improved. However the most effective treatment proved to be physical modification of the surface by means of a DCSBD plasma source.
