Original Abstract

Phytoestrogens are structurally similar to human estrogen and are assumed to play an important role in the prevention of tumor or heart disease, menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis. Soybeans/soy food is considered to be the most significant source of these compounds (up to units of mg per g of dry weight) present in different chemical forms – i.e. acetylglucosides, malonylglucosides and/or methyl ethers. However, the investigation of an impact of phytoestrogen consumption on human health has produced mixed and in some cases contradictory results. The most commonly used methods for phytotestrogen determination include liquid and gas chromatographic techniques or capillary electrophoresis and a cleanup process has to be performed to remove interferents from biological matrix that otherwise would negatively influence the analysis. Liquid–liquid extraction or various purification columns are employed for sample preparation. In the lecture, the benefits of coupling of capillary electrophoretic analysis with technology of molecular imprinting in analysis of phytoestrogens will be highlighted. The molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) allows for a selective recognition of targeted analyte. It is based on a formation of an analyte recognition surface that is created after polymerization of a mixture of analyte and suitable monomer. Nowadays, MIPs are used as specific selectors for pre-concentration of broad groups of analytes in food, beverages, water and/or soil samples. Polydopamin imprinted layer formed on the surface of magnetic particles enables efficient extraction/isolation of target compounds from the sample and following capillary electrophoresis with UV/Vis detection allows for powerful separation of potential nonspecific interferents.
