Original Abstract
To date, most of the materials used in tissue engineering such as titanium and its alloys suffer from the susceptibility to bacterial infections. The potential use of antimicrobial nanoparticles can make the material less susceptible to formation of biofilm, which could lead to increased success rate of individual applications. In our work we prepared TiO2 nanotubes via anodic oxidation in organic electrolyte containing ethylene glycol, ammonium fluoride and water. As a substrate we used thin titanium film with thickness of 500nm deposited onto 4-inch p-type silicon wafer covered by 500nm of thermal silicon dioxide. Anodic oxidation resulted in nanotubular surface with nanotube diameter of approximately 50 nanometers. To convert fabricated TiO2 nanotubes from amorphous to crystalline state, they were annealed at 450 °C for 3 hours. The annealed samples were further decorated with various concentrations of chemically synthesized selenium nanoparticles. Selenium nanoparticles were prepared by the reaction of glutathione and sodium selenite in water. Products of the reaction were spherical selenium nanoparticles with the diameter of approximately 80 nm. Modified surfaces were consequently evaluated in terms of antibacterial and cellular properties. Antibacterial activity was tested by the test of viability of E.Coli after the interaction with nanostructured surface. Cellular tests utilized MG-63 cells and were focused on adhesion and proliferation. More research needs to be done, however according to results gained so far, this modification could influence the implant acceptance in both orthopedic and dental implant applications.
