Original Abstract
In this work, we demonstrate the growth of amorphous silica shell onto as-synthesized water-soluble cadmium telluride QDs capped by 2-mercaptopropionic acid (CdTe MPA QDs). The main purpose was to prepare CdTe/SiO2 QDs while observing and comparing the growth of the shell during ethanolic and non-ethanolic precipitation. QDs with and without silica shells and QD aliquots during shell growth have been characterized in detail by several spectroscopy and microscopy techniques: Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), and by UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The mechanisms of shell formation are discussed. Silanization, as well as precipitation, are time-dependent, i.e. duration of these processes significantly influences the thickness of the silica shell. The results obtained represent supporting information for data published so far and create opportunities to formulate new hypotheses to research.
