Original Abstract
Modern trends in turbocharged direct injection gasoline engines and rising performance requirements on modern turbocharged diesel engines produce new challenges for developers and researchers. Besides standard issues including turbocharger and engine thermodynamics and their control options, there are also issues of vibration and noise, mechanical efficiency, gas blow-by and oil consumption. The paper presents a set of solution approaches used in the development of mechanically efficient and acoustically acceptable turbochargers. This comprehensive set of approaches includes software for multibody dynamics solution, the finite element method for solutions of strength and fatigue issues, a finite volume method for a bearing lubrication solution or specialized program tools to address specific issues. The results of individual computational approaches are verified by technical experiments on real turbochargers of diesel internal combustion engines.
