Original Abstract

Vacuum insulating panels are currently some of the most advanced building materials available with the rate of their production rising every year. This type of insulating material can have thermal conductivity up to 10 times lower than conventional insulations such an EPS or mineral wool. As the production of VIP increases, so does the consumption of raw materials needed for their manufacturing. The basis of VIPs is the core insulation material, most commonly made of glass fiber boards or pyrogenous SiO2-based insulation boards. The production of these insulations consumes a great amount of energy – hence the effort to find alternative, more eco-friendly insulations made with renewable and secondary raw materials suitable for this purpose. The paper describes new findings arrived at by the Brno University of Technology during research into the utilisation of alternative raw material resources (mainly secondary textile fibers) in the production of VIP core insulation.
