Original Abstract

Partial discharges occur when voltage applied to insulating sheets reaches a critical value which is characteristic for given insulator. The partial discharges are accompanied by acoustic emission events. The acoustic emission signal is measured by a piezoceramic sensor and partial discharges are detected by means of voltage pulses on a load resistance. While a spike of a partial discharge appears immediately, an acoustic event signal is delayed. The time interval depends on the distance of the place where partial discharge is created and the wave velocity propagation of an acoustic emission signal. The position of PD source can be estimated for a two channel measuring setup with two AE sensors. The proposed testing method can be used to obtain information on voids, cracks or air bubbles in metal-insulator-metal structures.
