Original Abstract
In modern well-insulated and technically advanced buildings, installation of radiant heating and cooling systems can be preferable due to their benefits. The higher response time of such systems, in combination with variations in weather conditions and internal heat gains require using an appropriate control strategy. Knowing the thermal response of the radiant systems is crucial to determine an efficient control strategy. We have performed stationary and dynamic computer simulations of five radiant heating systems: classical floor heating, floor heating with metals fins to enhance the heat transfer, wall heating, wall heating with an air gap, and ceiling TABS. The systems were compared in terms of thermal fields, heat flux distribution, and thermal response. Two indicators were used to express the thermal response of the systems: (1) number of operation cycles needed to keep thermal comfort and (2) response time defined as the time to reach 63% and 90% of the maximum heat output. The results underline the differences in the thermal response of various radiant heating systems. The thermal response is faster for the systems with narrow pipe spacing and low heat capacities of their active layers, such as the floor heating system with metal fins and the wall heating systems. Because of their versatility and fast thermal response, the two wall systems are especially suitable for installation in existing buildings as a part of their retrofit. The classical floor heating system and ceiling TABS had slow thermal dynamics and should be used in rooms with a stable heating load.
