Original Abstract

Agricultural-based industries produce a vastly amount of waste each year. In order to reduce the negative effect on the environment, the landfilling dumping or burning of this waste should be minimised. In this study an experimental verification of anaerobic fermentation of waste products from potato processing, specifically the various factions of settled starch and potato peelings is covered. The production of the biogas and its composition in the lab and as well the pilot scale was observed. The aim of laboratory mesophilic (37.0 °C) cultivation tests was to identify the appropriate dosing of the substrates into the bioreactor in terms of the biogas production and biogas composition and stability of anaerobic digestion. The substrates – native settled starch, starch fraction removed after coagulation with aluminium sulphate (containing a high concentration of aluminium ions) and potato peelings were analysed (TS, ash content, VS, pH and CHNS elemental analysis) and theoretical production and composition of biogas was estimated according to Buswell equation. Theoretical yields and biogas compositions was compared with results of lab and pilot cultivations. It was find out, that all tested substrates are suitable for anaerobic digestion with biogas production descending in the order: native starch, flocculated starch and potato peels.
