Original Abstract
Presentatation at FYD 2019 / Practices of Teaching 1st Year Design in Architecture conference, University of Nicosia, Cyprus, 23. 10. 2019–25. 10. 2019. There are currently many ways how to form architectural space. This contribution describes various approaches to teaching of the subject “Fundamentals of Architecture Design”. The methodology of the Primary Architecture is based on the Swiss model of teaching of professor Pierre von Meisse and was developed at Faculty of Architecture of the Brno University of Technology (in Department of Spatial Design and Department of Experimental Design). The main aim of the course is to provide first-year students with experience in space design using two different sculptural methods (addition vs subtraction) and applying them to different spa-tial principles (raumplan vs plan libre). The next level of the methodology is stimulation of stu-dents’ abstract thinking (transcription of graphic or literary template into three-dimensional composition). There is particular emphasis on the presentation of the project itself (populating the space and presentation via hand drawings).
