Original Abstract

Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) are passive samplers consisting of a thin film of a synthetic lipid (triolein), sealed inside a layflat low-density polyethylene tubing. They are used most often for sampling of hydrophobic organic contaminants from water, occasionally also from air, sediments and soil. These devices are believed to integratively sample only readily bioavailable (dissolved and/or vapor phase) portion of hydrophobic contaminants, whilst the sampling process mimics the diffusional transfer of organic contaminants through the membranes of aquatic organisms. Our study was focused on the mechanism of PAHs uptake from air by SPMDs. These devices were found to be able to sample not only vapour phase PAHs, but to certain extent also the PAHs present only in particulate phase. Main goal of our study was to observe the transport mechanisms of PAHs from the air into SPMDs. We tried to describe this process in detail using a mathematical modelling. We also made an attempt to estimate the Sampling Rate (RS) values for all US EPA priority pollutant PAHs; these values, which express the effective volume of sampled medium extracted daily by SPMD, are used for calculation of pollutant's average concentration in air or water from the amount sequestered by SPMDs. Experimental air sampling rates for all mentioned compounds are not available till now.
