Original Abstract

The aim of hazard identification and risk assessment in process industry is to find the critical points of determined sources of risk achieved by the selection method (for example Selection method CPR 18E) and to do quantitative assessment. Hazard identification is a key step in risk assessment since it precedes the risk analyses (Figure 1). Risk sources cannot be identified in any other step of risk assessment and if some of them are omitted, the final risk value will be underestimated. Therefore the risk sources must be chosen very carefully. The critical points (for example pipeline, vessel, etc.) are defined by the detailed analyses such as FMEA, HAZOP, etc. Results of these analyses are the input data for the next quantitative assessment. Quantitative assessment of risk consists of following steps: estimation of event frequency, estimation of the consequences, comparison with the criteria and decision about the action. The most difficult step is the consequences estimation of a possible accident, for which the specially designated programs (like SAFETI, EFFECTS) are used. The aim of the paper is to show the importance of HAZOP in the process of risk assessment and by a simple case study illustrate the relationship between hazard identification and evaluation of consequences.
