Original Abstract

The Accelerator Driven Subcritical System was historically proposed due to its unique properties - unprecedently high fast neutron flux density and inherent safety based on its subcriticality. Very good neutron economy could be a motivation either for breeding plutonium from huge stockpiles of depleted uranium, or to introduce thorium fuel cycle, or to produce other isotopes (e.g. past program Accelerator Production of Tritium); weapon grade plutonium can be also easily utilized by subcritical reactor. Historically the main objective for ADSS research and development is either actinides and fission products transmutation or just neutron production for various non-power related applications. Within past 25 year, many research projects have been investigated, a lot of simulations have been done, and the whole nuclear power world had changed. According to present knowledge, neither effective breeding of 239Pu as well as 233U nor fission products and actinides transmutation cannot be done without on-line chemical reprocessing, which can be feasible only with fluid fuel reactor concept. Concepts of liquid fuel based on lead/bismuth and molten salts reactors are discussed and compared in this contribution with an emphasis on the idea of development of sustainable small modular ADSS.
