Original Abstract

Thermal insulating materials help to improve thermal protection of buildings and reduce their energy efficiency and greenhouse gasses production. Due to ever-tightening requirements in the field of energy efficiency of buildings, the consumption of these materials is increasing worldwide every year. From the point of view of sustainable development, it is necessary to look for technologies and materials that are based on renewable resources and are also energy efficient from the point of view of their production. One of these types of materials are also insulating materials based on utilization of secondary textile fibers obtained from textile waste. The paper deals with the possibilities of recycling of textile waste and the utilization of secondary textile fibers for the production of thermal insulating materials suitable for insulation of vertical structures of building envelopes. These are insulators based on both natural and synthetic fibers with lower and medium bulk density, which can be made from secondary fibers by the thermal bonding method. The resulting thermal insulation properties of secondary fiber insulators are fully comparable to those of synthetic insulators, such as mineral wool or expanded polystyrene.
