Original Abstract

Neem seed oil is a possible option that can be used in biodiesel production. Moreover, the residue from neem tree seeds can help synthesize a catalyst for biodiesel production. This offers a different utility of the residue other than incineration or disposal. It provides opportunities for better use of the planet's resources and helps tackle the current century's energy problems. Current research has focused on the synthesis and characterization of potassium hydroxide catalyst supported with activated carbon derived from waste neem seeds post-oil extraction. In these instances, different catalyst types are introduced for the transesterification of neem oil for biodiesel production. It observed that biodiesel production's optimum conditions, a yield of biodiesel 93.9%, are 65 degrees C temperature, 120 min of reaction time, 9:1 methanol to oil ratio, and NC2 catalyst. Furthermore, when measured, the biodiesel's main properties were produced to meet the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) and European (EN) standards. This study proposes that potassium hydroxide (KOH) supported by activated carbon derived from neem seed residue is an effective catalyst for transesterification of local neem seed oil to produce biodiesel as a potential alternative fuel.
