Original Abstract
This contribution is focused on the interaction between positively charged catanionic vesicles and oppositely charged hyaluronan. Catanionic vesicles are formed from so called ion pair amphiphiles (IPA). Charged catanionic vesicles can also bring another benefit in the interaction with oppositely charged (bio)polymers through electrostatic interactions. This interaction can also improve the higher stability and biocompatibility of vesicles. Polysaccharide hyaluronan, which as a polymer present in the human body is fully biocompatible and fully biodegradable, appears to be very suitable for this purpose. Vesicles were prepared from hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTMAB) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and they were doped with positively charged dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (DODAC) and cholesterol. For interaction with them, hyaluronan of four different molecular weights (16, 418, 750, and 1670 kDa) was used. Size and ζ-potential titrations were used to characterize these interactions. The ζ-potential decreased with increasing addition of hyaluronan for all molecular weights. During higher additions, the formation of larger aggregates was observed. Around the point of charge equilibration, visible aggregates were made (larger than 1000 nm), which gradually disintegrated with continued addition of the polymer due to increased electrostatic repulsion or dilution.
