Ve dvojjazyčné knize se historik architektury Vladimír Šlapeta zamýšlí nad sto lety výuky architektonického oboru na Českém vysokém učení technickém v Praze. Když nedávno architekti – čeští i slovenští – slavili s celou společností centenarium zrodu Československé republiky, přidávali k slavnostním připomínkám i tu, kterou se Česká vysoká škola technická v létě 1920 dekretem přejmenovala na České vysoké učení technické. Jednou z jeho autonomních součástí se stala Vysoká škola architektury a pozemního stavitelství. Dodejme, že formálně – vládním dekretem z listopadu 1919 – byl založen odbor architektury a pozemního stavitelství Českého vysokého učení v Brně. Vedle již existujících fakult architektury na německých vysokých školách technických v Praze a v Brně dostala profese těmito změnami v rámci technického školství při vstupu do nové republiky legislativní rámec pro další nezávislý rozvoj oboru. Prof. Vladimír Šlapeta, náš přední historik architektury, vede čtenáře v pětadvaceti kapitolách svého eseje dějinami profesních vzdělávacích institucí na českém i slovenském území. Čerpá z hlubin svých badatelských nálezů, ale rovněž čerpá ze vzpomínek současníků a samozřejmě s nimi sestupuje sedimenty svých architektonických poznatků, ale i mnohých osobních zážitků. Úhrn čistě faktografický spolu s komentáři tematizuje vedle proměny pedagogické metodiky také architektonické styly své doby a je strukturován různými etapami vývoje profesního vzdělávání. Kantorské peripetie jsou zde protkány osobními osudy pedagogů-tvůrců. Zásadní i méně důležité příběhy dění na akademické scéně sledujeme mj. i prostřednictvím příchodů a odchodů jednotlivých pedagogů, to vše na pozadí politických zvratů a jejich dopadů na společnost. Autor nabízí živý pohled na profesní školství v souvislostech a naviguje čtenáře cestou od architektonických symbolů nového Československa a dvacetiletí existence demokratického státu přes nacistický zákaz vysokých škol, totalitní únor či tzv. normalizaci v okupované zemi až k dnešnímu třicetiletí od listopadového vzmachu v roce 1989. Zdaleka nejde jen o souhrn, kdo chce, najde tu i řadu palčivých otázek – včetně těch existenciálních… Mikrosvěty profesních škol, kde tušíme motivy budoucích tvůrčích stylů, jsou pečlivě sceleny vybranými fotografickými ilustracemi, rámu „myšlenkových hutí“ stavebního umění v centru střední Evropy právě uplynulého století.

In this bilingual book, architectural historian Vladimír Šlapeta reflects on 100 years of teaching architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague. Recently, when architects – Czech and Slovak – celebrated the centenary of the birth of the Czechoslovak Republic with the rest of society, they had another event to commemorate: the renaming of the Czech Technical College as the Czech Technical University by official decree in the summer of 1920. One of its autonomous parts became the College of Architecture and Civil Engineering. And it should be added that by a government decree of November 1919, the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical College in Brno was formally established still earlier. In addition to the already existing faculties of architecture at the German technical colleges in Prague and Brno, these changes in technical education at the start of the new republic gave the profession a legislative framework for further independent development of the field. In the twenty-five chapters of the present essay, Prof. Vladimír Šlapeta, our leading architectural historian, leads the reader through the history of architectural educational institutions in the Czech and Slovak territories. He draws from the depths of his research findings, yet equally on the memories with us through the sediments of his architectural knowledge, as well as many personal experiences. The purely factual summary, together with commentaries, thematizes the architectural styles of the time, in addition to the changing pedagogical methodology, and is structured by the different stages of the development of professional education. Cantorial vicissitudes are interwoven with the personal lives of the teacher-creators. Major and minor stories of events on the academic scene are traced, among other things, through the comings and goings of individual educators, all against the backdrop of political upheavals and their impact on society. The author offers a vivid picture of professional education in context, guiding the reader from the architectural symbolism of the new Czechoslovakia and the two decades of the democratic state, through the Nazi closure of Czech universities, the Communist “Victorious February” coup of 1948, and the so-called normalization after the 1968 Warsaw Pact military occupation, to the past thirty years since the November 1989 upheaval. Far from being a summary, those who want to will also find here a number of pressing questions – including existential ones… The microworlds of professional schools, where we can discern the emerging motifs of future creative styles, are skillfully evoked through selected photographic illustrations, framing the ‘think tanks’ of the building arts at the heart of central Europe in the century just past.
