Original Abstract
This abstract focuses on a novel application of irreversible electroporation (IRE) to recanalize occluded biliary metal stents used in cholangiocarcinoma treatment. The occlusion, or blockage, of the stent, is usually caused by epithelial hyperplasia, tumour ingrowth or overgrowth into the stent mesh, as well as clot accumulation. The survival of patients has improved to exceed 12 months however, the metal stent patency rate is reportedly between 14 and 321 days. Standard recanalization techniques such as mechanical cleaning with balloon catheter are not effective in case of hyperplasia or tumour ingrowth. Endoluminal radiofrequency ablation could be used but there is a certain risk of thermal damage that could be caused by the stent becoming an active electrode. These factors suggest that IRE could be a convenient choice.
