Original Abstract

Testing subjects participated in the test of maximal oxygen uptake. The participants were of diverse physical conditions, ranging from non-athletes to semi-professional endurance athletes. Every participant completed two tests on the cycle ergometer to maximal voluntary fatigue. Both tests used the same ramp protocol (with base load 1W/kg BW increasing by 30W/min, i.e. by 0.5W/s). First, the participant completed the test with reference breath analyzer (Metalyzer 3B), then completed another one with the VO2 Master Pro. The time between the tests varied from 1 to 2 days, different for each participant. Then testing subjects absolved the test of resting metabolic rate (RMR). All participants completed two measurements of RMR, one with the VO2 Master Pro and another one with the reference breath analyzer. The second measurement was taken right after the first one. The results of comparing maximal oxygen uptake data from both devices show that the VO2 Master Pro is valid enough for field-based testing of maximal oxygen uptake. On the other hand, the VO2 Master Pro does not achieve similar results in measuring RMR, thus it seems not valid and cannot be used as a replacement for standardized breath analyzers in measuring resting metabolic rate.
