Original Abstract

Purpose of the article: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) have to deal with many constraints compaired to larger enterprises. Managers of SMEs have to deal with these constraint by targeting them with their management competencies. Due to the difference in challenges this article aims to research the difference in management competency required. Methodology/methods: This research makes use of the scientific literature review. The PRISMA methodology is used to assess the literature available in “Web of Science“, “Scopus“ and “Google Scholar“. Scientific aim: The main aim of this article is to map the management competencies of SMEs identified by existing literature in renowned databases. This research should contribute to the body of knowledge by identifying research gaps and providing guidance for further research. Findings: The existing literature on management competencies in SMEs is very scarce. Foremost, the literature is focusing on the lack of managerial skills and the elimination of those through coaching, education and consultancy. The results in literature are general and do not target to map the management competencies of SMEs. Conclusions: More research on management competencies in SMEs is needed in order to purposefully target the requirements and realities of SMEs. The prevailing understanding of coaching, education, consultancy based on large company’s requirements does not seem adequate. This identifies a research gap where future publications may excel.
