Original Abstract
The paper describes the methodological guideline “Principles for using wearing courses in terms of skid resistance,” published in 2006 in the Czech Republic. It was intended for use in the planning of construction, maintenance, and repairs of wearing courses of motorways, roads, and local roads in terms of the sufficient skid resistance of the road surface. Nineteen types of wearing courses were represented, including maintenance technologies. Each wearing course is characterized by (i) the time history of the longitudinal friction coefficient, (ii) the speed dependence of the longitudinal friction coefficient, and (iii) the dependence of the duration of satisfactory skid resistance level on the traffic load. This guideline is outdated and needs a revision. Since the publication of this guideline, the number of used wearing courses (e.g., the so-called “quiet asphalt pavements”) has been significantly expanded. These wearing courses were included in monitored sections for which the longitudinal friction coefficient is being measured periodically to determine the skid resistance durability. The update of the guideline is currently carried out, and the paper also presents these improvements.
