Carotenogenic yeast are well known for high carotenoids, lipids or β-glucans production in their biomass which can be further used in food, feed, and pharmaceutical industry. Due to the increased accumulation of lipids in the biomass, they are classi-fied as oleogenic microorganisms. They are well-known for the ability to process different materials, carbon and nitrogen sour-ces, which makes them ideal for the possibility to use them for waste material treatment, such as waste oil and fat from agri-cultural or food industry. This waste treatment process then could be used as a part of circular economy cycle. This research is focused on screening study of different types of waste oils on carotenogenic yeasts. Research was divided into several parts. Firstly, media composition optimization and basic screening tests were done in Erlenmeyer flasks. Follow-up experiments with further optimization were carried out under controlled conditions in laboratory bioreactors. Research focused mainly on strains Rhodotorula, which have achieved significant results in the production of carotenoids and lipids with interesting bi-omass growth (above 20 g/l). Results proved our assumption, that use of waste oil substrates leads to higher stress levels, and thus to higher production of studied metabolites.
