Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable, biocompatible, and non-toxic biopolymers produced primarily by microorganisms. They share similar properties with commonly used plastic materials (which are mostly derived from petrochemicals) and could replace them in multiple applications. The most produced PHA is poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), but due to its high crystallinity, it is a rather stiff and brittle material which limits its range of applications. However, when various monomers are incorporated into the PHA chain, the crystal structure of the biopolymer is partially disrupted, and the mechanical properties of the bioplastic are improved. Therefore, it is crucial to search for suitable PHA producers able to utilize various substrates and produce different PHA biopolymers.
