Original Abstract

Human exposure to high concentrations of uranium is extremely dangerous due to the risk of developing numerous internal organ malignancies over time. This manuscript deals with the estimation and retention of uranium (water) in various organs and their associated radiological doses in the Balachaur and Nawanshahr regions of Punjab (India). The retention of uranium in different organs were estimated through the uranium Biokinetic hair compartment model. Uranium enters into human beings through the stomach and further migrates to various organs thorough blood circulation in the body. Radiological doses corresponding to various location sites were estimated using the obtained uranium concentrations in water samples and dose conversion factors given by international commission of radiation protection (ICRP). The average range of the uranium concentration in the studied region was lower than the recommended value given by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of India (AERB). Further, the time dependence studies of uranium showed that the Liver, kidney, other soft tissues and trabecular bone volume are the main storage sites for uranium.
