Original Abstract

This paper discusses the measurement of the complete matrix of the material coefficients of PZT ceram-ics, namely, the piezoelectric, elastic, and dielectrics coefficients. The correct values of the piezoelectric material coefficients are decisive for a successful and accurate mathematical simulation. Simulations that correspond to reality are essential for high quality designing of piezoelement-based sensors. To determine the coefficients, we em-ployed the frequency measurement method in compliance with the European standard EN50324 and the world standard CEI/IEC 60483:1976. According to these standards, the coefficient matrices are calculated from the entry parameters, which need to be measured and also include the dimensions of the piezoelements, the reso-nant and anti-resonant frequencies, the dissipation factor, and the free capacitance at 1 kHz. Such meas-urements can be performed with various types of impedance analyzers. To perform the experiment, we applied three widely used impedance analyzers: an Agilent 4294A, a Wayne-Kerr 6520B, and a LCR Hi-tester HIOKI 3532. These instruments then enabled us to measure the samples including thin discs, thin plates, and cylinders made of the NCE51 soft PZT ceramics. A custom application developed in LabVIEW was used to control the testing procedures and to collect the data from the analyzers. In this context, the paper focuses on comparing the accuracy and suitability of the results obtained with the three instruments. The aim of the measurement was to determine whether the same material coefficient values can be achieved within the required toler-ance by using instruments having different parameters.
