Original Abstract
Water treatment and pollutant degradation is a hot research topic these days and photocatalytic reactions provide promising results for this application domain. The most common catalyst for these applications is titanium dioxide with a bandgap varying around 3,2 eV which corresponds to UV-A radiation spectral range. The high rate of recombination of photoexcited electrons from conduction band back to valence band constitutes the major drawback of traditional photocatalysis. This unwanted process can be eliminated by applying external positive bias to the catalyst that separates electron–hole pair and draws the photogenerated electrons into a separate cathode.
