Original Abstract

Overloaded road network, slow public transport, or the absence of safe cycling infrastructure are persistent issues in most cities. One way to reach the goal of sustainable mobility is through intelligent urban planning based on the regulation of future traffic demands. This approach, also known as the city of short distances, is used in the New Master Plan of the city of Brno. In contrast to the original urban planning practice, urban functions are not divided into particular city sectors, but they are combined and the density of development increases by brownfield conversions and low-level building redevelopments. Although this policy brings more inhabitants to areas easily reached by public transport, bike, or walking instead of car-dependent suburbs, there are still subjects rejecting this policy and thus hindering new development in the inner city because the users of the new buildings could add to local congestion risk. This paper illustrates representative examples of sustainable mobility planning in the New Master Plan of the city of the second largest city in the Czech Republic with their factual argumentations.
