Original Abstract
A standard method for controlling a phase-shifted full bridge converter is the voltage-mode PWM. In this case the switching signals are based on an internal ramp generator and the control voltage affects the phase shift directly. With such control method it is not guaranteed that the transformer flux density remains within specified boundaries for both static and dynamic (transient) control behavior as the positive and negative pulse widths are not linked in any way. This paper presents an alternative approach which uses a reconstructed flux signal as the basis for generating the control signals, assuring the flux stays within the control boundaries even for very fast transients, with superimposed interference etc. Also, it requires no internal ramp generator as the reconstructed flux waveform itself is used as the reference ramp. Such control allows for construction of high-quality converters with a very fast dynamic response, finding use in welders, plasma arc supplies etc.
