Original Abstract

This article shortly describes the structure of the butterflies’ wings scales, their variations and properties. Experimental data obtained herein using an atomic force microscope (AFM) instrument sheds some light on the Coenonympha pamphilius scaly wing structure. Coenonympha pamphilus is the smallest butterfly of Satyrinae subfamily and is otherwise known as the ‘small heath’. The study of the butterflies’ wings structure is important for creation/improvement of photonic crystals which are commonly used in the field of optoelectronics.
