Original Abstract

The article deals with the methodology of time-dependent reliability analysis. Reliability is quantified using a partial reliability index. The probabilistic assessment procedure is applicable to steel bridges with fatigue defects from cyclic loading. The case study shows that the fastest decline in the reliability of the load-bearing steel structure is observed at the beginning of the operating period. On the other hand, inspections aimed at identifying fatigue cracks and possible repairs to the load-bearing structure should be carried out, especially in the second half of the operation period of the bridge. This article discusses the use of stainless steel in connection with methods for verifying the reliability of steel structures. The use of stainless steel in the construction industry does not have a long tradition, therefore, fatigue degradation of reliability is not known from observations of real structures over the duration of the entire service life. The advantages of using modern materials are also discussed in the context of verified fatigue assessment procedures, which are based on validated design procedures developed for carbon steel load-bearing elements.
