Original Abstract

Kaðlín Sara Ólafsdóttir’s compositional practice and sound art explores the possible ways in which to relate to audio cassettes and portable cassette players, the imperfections of their analogue form and the ways in which they evoke personal memory and feelings of nostalgia. Kaðlín is currently finishing her master’s studies at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague and recently released her debut album Hljóðfirring, connecting melodies carried between three different cities. Accompanied by Toby Kruit, she will present material from Hljóðfirring at the NEXT Festival, exploring the meanings and possible ways of belonging to a place called home. Together, we talked about her fascination for discovered material, used cassette players, the way in which sound can recall a memory, the meaning of a home and field recording.
