Original Abstract
This article shows an example of new forms of analysing space using sensory perception. It is based on the experience of my pedagogical practice with the students of the Faculty of Architecture BUT designing the reconstruction of the 16th-century Capuchin monastery. The place with a very rich memory, inaccessible to the public for a long time could seem to be just the desolate territory with old unsightly buildings. As supervisors, we wanted to encourage the students to think beyond the architectural and urban studies and develop an awareness of the importance of using all senses in perceiving the quality of the visual environment. How is it possible to explore more than we can see? Maybe the way is to dim the light, dim the sight and engage the other senses. To re sensualise architecture through a strengthened sense of materiality, hapticity and the light, deep shadows and darkness are essential, because they dim the sharpness of vision, make depth, distance ambiguous, and invite unconscious peripheral vision and tactile fantasy. That is why, one of the methods of analysing the space was staying in the monastery at night in the dark. Each of the students was invited to find a room or detail and with the help of the light present his attitude to light and darkness in relation to the chosen space. This activity stimulated new perspectives for participants, but is it possible to convey the experience of the space to others? I believe this authentic experience with the space has the potential to materialize the memory of the place in action of revitalization proposals.
