Original Abstract

Microplastics are ubiquitous across all environmental compartments and living systems. Understanding their impact and fate requires analytical methods that are both sensitive and robust. Additionally, in complex substrates, sample pretreatment is sometimes necessary to minimize matrix effects and enhance the sensitivity of the techniques employed. Our group focuses on evaluating the effects of both conventional and biodegradable plastics on soils and living organisms. In some cases, pretreatments such as digestion or extraction are not feasible, prompting us to avoid these labor-intensive procedures. Presented case study involved analyzing biodegradable microplastics made of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB) ingested by Daphnia magna during ecotoxicological tests using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry.
