Original Abstract

This work addresses the influence of experimental artefacts and the limitations of fitting models used to de- termine porous material parameters by an experiment exploiting ultrasound transmission, with an emphasis on tortuosity. The sensitivity of the transmitted ultrasonic signal to geometrical factors, such as transducer and sample alignment, as well as transmitter-receiver distance-dependent diffraction, is reported, and the influence of signal bandwidth and dynamic range on the signal analysis is assessed. To establish the an- ticipated limitations of the selected fitting models, the different effects are investigated by fitting porous material property values in different controlled scenarios of an ultrasonic transmission setup. Validation of determined tortuosity values is done by comparison with values extracted from impedance tube measure- ments in the audio frequency range.
