Original Abstract

IP multicast sessions typically rely on the Real Time Protocol (RTP) and Real Time Control Protocol (RTCP). The RTCP protocol is used to distribute feedback values among session members. The feedback usually provides information about the quality of session transmission. The feedback is also used to report overlay application-specific data. However, not all the feedback data from session members are of equal importance - feedback from some members needs to be reported more frequently. In this paper, we introduce the bandwidth redistribution algorithm developed for the one-to-many multicast sessions. The algorithm is used to increase the feedback rate of selected session members above a minimum guaranteed value. A higher feedback rate allows reporting more accurate results, which makes the overlay application more usable. Furthermore, we present two example applications of the algorithm: real-time sensor application and hierarchical aggregation for single source multicast.
